Why We Chose an Outdoor Newborn Session at Mercer Arboretum
Outdoor Newborn Photography in Houston, Alvin, Pearland & Surrounding Areas
There's something incredibly peaceful about photographing a newborn surrounded by nature.
When Olivia's mom reached out to schedule her newborn session, it felt like coming full circle. I've been photographing her family for years—starting with her senior portraits, then her college graduation, Christmas sessions, her beautiful beach maternity session, and now welcoming sweet Olivia into the world.
Those are the moments that remind me why I love photography so much. It's never just about taking beautiful pictures. It's about preserving an entire family's story, one chapter at a time.
For Olivia's newborn session, we met at the beautiful Mercer Arboretum in Spring, Texas. With its winding paths, towering trees, soft gardens, and peaceful atmosphere, it was the perfect backdrop for documenting these first precious days.
Why Choose an Outdoor Newborn Session?
When most people think of newborn photography, they picture a studio filled with wraps, props, and backdrops.
While studio photography certainly has its place, outdoor newborn sessions offer something completely different—a timeless, natural feel that allows your baby to become part of the landscape instead of the entire focus of it.
Instead of creating a scene, nature creates it for us.
The result feels organic, emotional, and filled with life.
Babies Are Surprisingly Relaxed Outdoors
One thing that surprises many parents is just how content babies tend to be outside.
During spring and fall especially, the temperatures are comfortable, there's a gentle breeze, birds singing in the background, and natural white noise all around us.
Many newborns sleep through almost their entire outdoor session.
The fresh air, gentle movement, and peaceful surroundings often help babies settle naturally without the bright lights or confined environment of a studio.
Olivia was no exception. She stayed wonderfully calm, allowing us to move slowly through the gardens while capturing every tiny detail.
The Whole Family Gets to Be Part of the Story
One of my favorite parts about outdoor newborn photography is that it naturally becomes a family session.
Parents can cuddle together beneath the trees.
Big brothers and sisters have room to explore while we capture genuine interactions.
Instead of asking siblings to quietly sit on a studio floor waiting their turn, they can laugh, walk hand-in-hand, pick flowers, or simply snuggle close to their newest family member.
Those authentic moments become some of the images families treasure most.
Nature Never Goes Out of Style
Studio trends come and go.
Backdrops change.
Props change.
Editing styles evolve.
Nature has always been beautiful.
The soft greens, warm sunlight, towering trees, and gentle colors create photographs that remain timeless decades from now.
Rather than focusing on elaborate props, every image keeps your baby exactly where they belong—the heart of the story.
More Variety in One Session
Outdoor locations naturally provide incredible variety without ever feeling forced.
Within a single session we can photograph:
Family portraits
Parent and baby portraits
Sibling interactions
Individual newborn portraits
Wrapped baby portraits
Detail images of tiny fingers, toes, and eyelashes
Wide environmental portraits that showcase the beauty of the season
Every few steps offers a completely different backdrop while maintaining a cohesive gallery.
Outdoor Newborn Sessions Feel Like Your Family
One thing I hear from parents over and over is that they want their photographs to feel like them.
If your family loves being outside, enjoys hiking, gardens, parks, or simply spending time together in nature, an outdoor newborn session reflects your personality in a way a traditional studio often can't.
Your baby's first portraits become part of your family's story instead of simply documenting a stage of life.
Why Mercer Arboretum Was the Perfect Choice
For Olivia's session, Mercer Arboretum provided everything we could have hoped for.
Beautiful filtered light.
Lush greenery.
Quiet walking paths.
Open spaces for family portraits.
Private corners where we could work slowly and safely with a sleepy newborn.
While Mercer Arboretum is an absolutely gorgeous location, I photograph outdoor newborn sessions throughout the greater Houston area, including Alvin, Pearland, Friendswood, League City, Galveston, and many other nearby parks and natural spaces. Together, we'll choose a location that's beautiful, convenient, and fits your family's style.
My Favorite Part
Watching families grow is one of the greatest privileges of my job.
Photographing Olivia wasn't just another newborn session.
It meant watching one of my senior clients become a mother. (See her momma’s maternity session HERE)
It meant remembering graduation photos, holiday portraits, a maternity session on the beach, and now seeing her hold her beautiful baby girl.
Those moments remind me that photographs aren't just for today.
They're pieces of a family's history.
And years from now, I hope Olivia will look back at these images and know just how deeply she was loved from the very beginning.
