What NOT to Wear to for Family Portraits

I know, I know! We talk all the time about what to wear for family portraits. But, I thought that I’d discuss a few things not to wear as well! Now. I’m going to preface this whole blog post with the fact that this is my opinion based on years of photographing (and editing) family sessions! So, if you don’t agree, you can totally ignore what I have to say!

Additionally, this is information for outdoor lifestyle sessions where your family will be on the move and not just standing in one place posing. Some of this advice is not so important if you are in the studio having a portrait made!

MATCHING OUTFITS

Everyone wearing matching outfits was definitely a hot trend for a while. However, having your family wear coordinating outfits is so much better! Coordinated outfits allow for each member of the family to stand out and be seen while still being in the family group. Many times, family members get lost in a sea of the same color, matching outfits. Instead change up the patterns and shades so everyone stands out!

LOGOS, CHARACTERS AND WORDS

All of these elements, even small ones, tend to pull a viewer's eye away from a subject. We want everyone to be re it should be. On your family! After all, that’s the whole point of the session!

SOMETHING ON YOUR WRIST OR IN YOUR POCKET

This one is simple but super important! Check your wrists for headbands and scrunchies and take everything out of your pockets! Fitbots and Apple watches are another no no. All of these things are not easy to edit out of a picture, and no one needs an outline of a cell phone in their pocket or the weird bulge that shows from keys!

THE WRONG COLORS

When choosing colors, make sure you choose a good shade. It’s best to avoid bright colors. Think mustard yellow versus bright yellow.  Or a dusty pink versus a neon pink.

THE WRONG FIT

Family sessions are active! Dads will be lifting kids in the air. I might have everyone show off some dance moves. Kids will be running and jumping. So! With that in mind, make sure tops are long enough to cover bellies if arms are lifted. Avoiding super form fitting outfits is important as well. They tend to ride and bunch in all the wrong places once everyone gets moving!

THE WRONG SHOES

I mentioned that family sessions are active! Wearing shoes that are too tight or that pinch is a sure way to not enjoy your session! It’s hard to concentrate on having fun and enjoying your family when it hurts to walk! Also, most outdoor family sessions are in grassy areas that can be uneven. Wearing tall heels to move around in can result in twisted ankles on uneven ground.
