How to Prepare for Your Family Photography Session in Houston | Christy White Photography
Wondering how to prepare for family photos? Get simple, stress-free tips for your Houston family photography session with Christy White Photography.
Planning family photos should feel exciting — not overwhelming. As a Houston family photographer, one of the most common questions I hear is, “What should we do to prepare?”
The good news? Preparing for your family photography session is simpler than you think. A little planning goes a long way toward creating relaxed, natural portraits you’ll love for years.
Serving families in Houston, Pearland, Alvin, Friendswood, and Galveston, here are my top tips to help you feel confident and ready.
1. Choose Coordinated (Not Matching) Outfits
Instead of everyone wearing the same color, aim for coordinated tones.
✔ Soft neutrals
✔ Earth tones
✔ Light blues, creams, muted greens
Avoid:
Loud patterns
Logos
Neon colors
If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to offer wardrobe guidance before your session. Check out some outfit inspiration on Pinterest HERE.
2. Think About Location & Light
Your session location helps set the tone. Whether we’re at a park, waterfront, or another Houston-area spot, I’ll guide you toward locations with flattering natural light.
Golden hour (just before sunset) is ideal for warm, beautiful images.
3. Don’t Stress About Perfect Behavior
Children don’t need to sit perfectly still. In fact, some of the most beautiful images happen during movement — walking, laughing, cuddling, and interacting naturally.
My job is to guide the session and create a relaxed environment so genuine smiles happen organically. You may feel like it is chaos, but I am watching for the meaningful connection within that chaos. I expect kids to act like kids and that is ok! Just embrace the moment (and your family) and not only will you get beautiful images but also a beautiful memory!
4. Keep It Simple Before the Session
A few easy tips:
Make sure kids are well-rested
Bring a small snack if needed and water
Arrive a few minutes early
Keep expectations light and positive
The calmer you feel, the smoother the session goes.
5. Trust the Process
You don’t need to know how to pose or where to stand — that’s my job.
I’ll gently guide you through natural positioning while keeping everything relaxed and fun.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s connection.
Why Preparation Matters
When families arrive prepared and relaxed, we can focus on what really matters: capturing authentic moments and genuine connection.
Professional family photography isn’t just about looking at the camera — it’s about preserving this season of life.
